Watching the new season of the Orville. First I should say it is fantastic just as the previous seasons and if you haven’t seen it, absolutely go check it out. Just don’t expect a full blown comedy, it’s more like a sci-fi drama with comedic relief.
The Beauty of what Seth has done is create a comedic environment that feels natural. So much so that the comedic aspect helps to make the show and characters feel more real. More believable, something that other shows should take note of. Real people aren’t always tense and serious, even under stressful situations they may crack a joke, and are often awkward, things they say may not be taken as intended. That is the style of comedy in the Orville and it serves beautifully to make the show and characters feel more real, more organic.
That being said I see you Seth MacFarlane. I see your sneaky conservative ideas that Hollywood would have your career for. Trying to hide it within seemingly Progressive Concepts. You show your true politics and I must say I’m a fan.
In the show there is a species composed entirely of males. They mate and reproduce homosexually. No objections here. It’s a cool concept to explore one that I’m sure Progressive are fond of and prob think is for them.
(Warning minor spoilers ahead.)
But as the show goes on it is revealed that on rare occasions females are born, and when this rare event occurs the child promptly undergoes an sex change. Now is where things get interesting. When two of our characters have a child born female, one parent wants to have the sex changed and one does not. Oh my now we have an interesting predicament, now I won’t tell you the outcome, I want you to go watch for yourselves. But I will say the show positions itself such that the viewer is compelled to support the side of leaving the child alone to grow and ass a female rather than change the sex. How conservative a concept even if it would be considered liberal to the spices in question.
Based on my limited viewing of the new season it seems we will be revisiting that issue.
But before that happens we will encounter yet another decidedly conservative take one that this time I generally disagree with, but once again is done beautifully. As we find one of the alien species punishes those who are found to have preformed illegal abortions by creating an AI hologram depicting the child that would have been if the abortion had not happened.
Good stuff, now I don’t know that Seth’s actual opinions are meant to be depicted here in either detection. What I do know is that it does an excellent job of showing the viewer just how complex and difficult these issues actually are. It helps to point out that the world isn’t black and white. Some things aren’t as simple as right and wrong. Sometimes we try to do the right thing and the outcome isn’t as expected.
Remember none of us can predict the future or see every Factor, we are god. Intentions are far more important to whether or not someone is a good person than outcomes.
Thanks to anyone who read this far into my late night thoughts. Please discuss in the comments watch the show if you haven’t and always remember to love each other. Life isn’t worth stressing over and you never get a second chance to make new old friends.
